Living Root Bridge - Meghalaya Series #5
Does bridges live or how does a waterfall become a rainbow?
Previously, last night we reached the homestay at the entry of the Nongriat village - that was supposedly the only and good stays at the place.
But, definitely it was more than what was needed at such a place, and more than what could be possible at such a remote place.
If you still haven’t read the previous pieces in the Meghalaya Series, go catch them in the Footboard page, with other interesting articles🫶🏼
So, we started the day with a porridge breakfast, which was told as the routine dish in the surrounding. Then we started the short trek ahead of the stay. Just less than 50m from the homestay, we had -
Living Root Bridges
Firstly, we have the Single Decker Root Bridge, before we reach the homestay, which is okay, fascinating the moment we see it. But wait for the actual hero to come.
So, you cross the place, and reach the Double Decker Root Bridge.
These sites have recently been added to the tentative UNESCO world heritage site list! They are made of intertwined roots which are a sort of magic, but they aren’t imaginary.
These bridges have been built for centuries by the indigenous people of the land(Khasis and the Jaintias). They have also been used by these people to cross the overflowing rivers during the monsoon season.
Just next the Double Decker, we also have a pond kinda, where you can see shoal of fishes, just uncountable; so, enjoy your fish spa.
Be careful on the Root Bridge, as not more than 5-6 people can be on it, at the same time.
We crossed the bridge, and walked ahead. It was such a calm and peaceful forest; the guides said there is not much of fauna/animals in the wild, as poaching and hunting is very common here in Meghalaya, and apparently, most of the wildlife has already been wiped off from the place, known for India’s most dense forest covers! Sad to know this.
The trail was soothing and calm, that none of us really were exhausted and dehydrated. As the next place was the only thing on plan for today, we know that there is a lot of time. We maintained good pace, to reach the most awaited place on list.
Rainbow Falls
The Rainbow Falls is called so because you can always see a rainbow over it when there is sunshine. However, there was considerably less water and no shining rays from the sky. So, no real rainbows for us but the view was still worth it.
When you trek towards the Rainbow falls, or even while coming back, you will witness a Blue Lagoon, I would call it blueeee lagoon😍 the best place to enjoy your swimming in ice-cold water
You remember from the last piece I had told to wait for the best Blue Lagoon, this is it.
You can get in after taking a life jacket for rent, while it is mandatory and most suggested too. Enjoy the best swim in your life!
Anyways, after the swim, I enjoyed noodles and soup from a local vendor, just there in the waterfall - wowwww!, maybe if you spot someone there, try it for just Rs. 20.
After this, we trekked back and spent a lot of time in the Double Decker Bridge, as there is no one coming to this place after 4 PM usually. So, use this quality time there, for your sunset and fish spa.
Then we retired in the homestay, and dozed off after the dinner.
Thanks a lot for reading. Show us your love💖
